Top Things to do in Kanab, Utah
Let’s jump straight into exploring all of the top things to do in Kanab. I stayed in Kanab for a few days, and had the opportunity to explore most of the top spots, Kanab local favorites and hidden gems.
1. The Great Chamber / Cutler Cove
Time required: 30 min + time to get to the cave
Hike: 0.5 miles
Challenges: hard to access, need 4WD or book a tour
I will start the list of top things to do in Kanab with my favorite spot and the one that is absolutely unique – the Great Chamber (also called the Cutler Cove).
It is definitely the most unique thing to do in Kanab, Utah, and a popular Kanab Instagram spot, The Great Chamber is a nature wonder and should be added to your Utah travel bucket list.
The Great Chamber/Cutler Cove is a huge yellow sand cave, located right outside of Kanab, Utah. It contains some of the most unique and picturesque landscapes in the United States. The cave itself stretches over 500 feet in length and can reach heights of up to 200 feet. It features intricate patterns on its walls that have been created by water dripping through the limestone over centuries.
Exploring the Great Chamber/Cutler Cove is an adventure like no other. You are required to hike several miles through rugged terrain to reach this hidden gem. Once inside, you will be greeted with awe-inspiring views of towering rock formations illuminated by natural light filtering through craggy openings in the ceiling.
This geological marvel provides a glimpse into what life was like millions of years ago, when our planet was still being formed. It is a photographer’s paradise.
How to get to Great Chamber:
Getting to the Great Chamber can be a little tricky. You need a 4WD vehicle to get there, but the path is hard to find. We opted out for an easier (and more fun!) option and rented ATVs from Moqui Cave. The tour guide took our group right to the entrance of the Great Chamber. Besides that, we also visited Peekaboo Canyon (another place on our list) and drove ATVs through the beautiful red sand dunes!
Click here to book a tour to The Great Chamber! I highly recommend this tour! During this 4-hour tour, you will drive the ATVs through beautiful pink sand dunes, visit The Great Chamber, and visit one of the best slot canyons in Utah – Peekaboo Canyon. All with an experienced guide! It was our favorite adventure from our entire Utah trip! Seriously, absolutely everyone in our group was impressed!
You can also do a long hike to reach the Cutler Cove, read more info on hiking to The Great Chamber here.
The Great Chamber is definitely one of the best things to do in Utah.
2. Moqui Caves or Moqui Caverns – Kanab Sand Caves
Time required: 30-40 min
Hike: 0.5 miles
Challenges: steep climb
Location: Click Here for a Location of Moqui Caves
DO NOT CONFUSE WITH MOQUI CAVE (museum) – it’s a different place!
Moqui Caves, or Moqui Caverns are also called the Kanab Sand Caves by the locals. It’s a collection of small, unique man-made sand caves right outside of Kanab. It is also a very photogenic spot in Kanab and one of the most popular Instagram spots in Kanab.
Moqui Caves is a very unique and fun thing to do in Kanab, Utah. It is also less touristy, and definitely worth the quick stop on your Kanab itinerary.
To get to the Moqui caverns, you will need to take Hwy 89 towards Zion. The caverns are exactly between the Best Friend’s Animal Sanctuary and the Moqui Museum. So after passing the Animal Sanctuary, be on the lookout for the sign to the caverns on your right. You’ll also be able to see the caverns from the highway.
There’s a parking lot area. After you park, there’s only a short trail to reach the cave. Getting up to the cave looks a little tricky, but don’t get intimidated. You will see the best path to climb up, where all the people are. To be honest, it looks much more difficult than it really is. Everyone in my group (ages 5-60) was able to do the climb, so don’t be intimidated by it. But be careful and don’t rush, so you don’t slip.
The caverns are fairly small, and you only need about 10-15 min to explore them. There were very few people there, so we had the caverns all to ourselves!
I’d definitely recommend adding this quick stop to your Kanab must see list.
TIP: The Moqui Caves have amazing lighting 1 hour before the sunset – they are illuminated golden yellow. That’s the time when we visited the caves, and they were absolutely beautiful.
3. Moqui Cave Museum
Time required: 20 – 40 min
Hike: none
Entrance fee: $5-$10
Your next stop right after Moqui Sand Caves will be Moque Cave Museum, probably 3-4 minutes later. Moqui Cave is a very quick stop for 15-30 minutes and no hiking is required.
Once a bar for Hollywood actors to escape the heat during the filming of Western movies, and now a museum. The best part is that the owner and some of his employees are very friendly, and they are descended from the original owners. They have so many interesting stories to tell.
The Moquie Museum is located inside the canyon wall, and there you can learn about Utah history, see some dinosaur bones and old Utah artifacts, visit the Florescent mineral room, shop for antique jewelry and buy some souvenirs.
We also got an incredible tour here, a 4×4 tour to the pink sand dunes with the stops at the Peekaboo Slot Canyon and the Chamber. Click here to check out the tour. I highly recommend this tour, it was the best Utah experience that we tried! Although you can tour these places on your own, without a tour guide, you will need a 4×4 to reach it, and it is a little hard to locate these places, so getting this tour will make your life much easier.
4. The Wave
Time required: 3-4 hours
Hike: 6 miles roundtrip
Permit required: Yes!
4WD: Required after rain
Challenges: very hard to get a permit
Location: click here for the Wave Location
The Wave is definitely the most sought-after bucket list destination in Utah and the premier photographic destination in the US Southwest. You probably saw it all over social media!
It is almost impossible to get a permit to hike the Wave. They have a lottery system for permits, and I have tried many times already, but I haven’t been lucky enough to get a permit yet. The Wave has a very limited number of permits per day (around 60 per day), with around 300 people applying daily! The most popular months are April, May, September, and October. Your chances are better if you’re going alone, or in December – February.
There are 2 options on how to get a permit to hike the Wave.
- Apply on the website 3 or 4 months in advance (Click here to apply for the Wave permit) or
- Apply 2 days in advance if you’re already in the area (Click here to apply).
Only 48 permits are granted three months in advance, and 16 permits are granted one day in advance. As far as I know, the local lottery is done with geo-fencing, so you have to be in the area to apply.
Click here to find more information on The Wave Permits.
So if you really want to hike the Wave, your best bet is to start applying months in advance. If you’ve had no luck, you still have a chance to enter the lottery whenever you’re in the area. Everyone who has done this hike has only great things to say about the Wave, so I think it is well worth all the hassle!
The Wave is located in the Coyote Buttes North area of the Utah Arizona border. You will need to drive about 1 hour outside of Kanab to the Wire Pass Trailhead. A 6-mile round-trip hike is required to reach the Wave.
You will be provided the map by BLM (bureau of land management) for directions. You will hike 3 miles one way before you reach the famous photographic landscape of the Wave. The Wave is just one small part of the Coyote Buttes North wilderness area. At the end of the hike, you can explore the entire region, which includes more remarkable formations like the Second Wave.
The Wave is definitely the most popular thing to do in Kanab and one of the top US bucket list hikes!
5. Belly of the Dragon
Belly of the Dragon is definitely a hidden gem in Utah. It is less touristy than other places on the list, but I’d add it to your Utah travel bucket list. It is a very quick and easy stop and is so beautiful and unique. You need about 20-40 min to explore the cave.
To get to Belly of the Dragon from Kanab, take highway 89 towards Zion for roughly 16 miles (15 minutes). Right before reaching the turnoff for Zion (Mount Carmel Junction), you will make a left onto a dirt road. Once you exit the highway, you will follow the road until you see the cave on your left side. There will be a small area to park.
Once you arrive at the Belly of the Dragon, you will need to do a little climbing to get into the cave. And once inside, it’s a very short 10 min walk through the cave. The cave is really dark, so don’t forget to bring a flashlight.
Belly of the Dragon has become an Instagram must-have when visiting Kanab, and I’m sure you will like this quick but interesting stop on your trip to Kanab.
6. Peekaboo Slot Canyon (Red Canyon)
Hike: Under 1 mile
Time required: 30 min – 1 hour + time to get to the slot canyon
Location: Click here for Peekaboo Slot Canyon location
Challenges: hard to access, needs ATV or 4WD, but better get a tour
Book a Tour: click here
Peekaboo Canyon (or Red Canyon) is a beautiful slot canyon in Kanab, that slightly reminded me of Antelope Canyon (but without the Antelope Canyon crowds). It is very photographic and definitely on the list of the most beautiful slot canyons in Utah.
To get to Peekaboo Canyon, you need to drive through the sandy road, which requires an ATV or 4WD.
The best way to get to Peekaboo Canyon is to rent an ATV or join the tour.
Click here to check out the tour I took, that included ATV rentals, Peekaboo Canyon, and also the Great Chamber.
There are also other tours available:
- 1,5 hour tour of Peekaboo Canyon – click here to check it out
- 3 hour tour- click here to check it out
Since most people choose not to take tours in Kanab, there are not too many people in the Peekaboo Canyon. This, in my opinion, makes it even better! Peekaboo Slot Canyon is one of the most beautiful places in Utah, so I’d recommend adding it to your Kanab must visit places list.
7. Peekaboo Canyon + The White Wave
There is also a tour that combines a visit to Peekaboo Canyon and another unique place in Kanab, the White Wave.

8. Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park
Hike: On sand dunes, as long as you like
Time required: 1-3 hours
Location: click here for Coral Pink Sand Dunes location
Fees: $10 per vehicle
The Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is one of the most popular things to do in Kanab Utah. These vibrant pink sand dunes cover an area of over 3,000 acres and rise to heights of up to 700 feet, creating a unique and otherworldly landscape that is unlike anything else in the region.
The sand dunes are the result of millions of years of erosion and wind, which have slowly eroded the Navajo sandstone cliffs that surround the area. The resulting pink sand is made up of tiny grains of quartz and feldspar, which reflect the sunlight and create a dazzling display of colors throughout the day.
You can explore the Coral Pink Sand Dunes on foot, by ATV, or by sandboarding and sleds, a very fun activity that involves surfing down the dunes on a board.
The Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park offers a variety of amenities for visitors, including campsites, picnic areas, and hiking trails. The park is open year-round and is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and families.
Coral Pink Sand Dunes is one of the top ATV and OHV terrains in the area. So if you’ve always wanted to try driving an ATV, it’s probably one of the best places to do so. We definitely loved this unique and fun experience!
Whether you’re looking to explore the dunes on foot, by ATV, or sandboard, or simply soak up the stunning natural beauty of the area, a visit to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes is a must-do when in Kanab. It is a unique and unforgettable experience because where else will you find pink sand dunes?

Buckskin Gulch is the longest and deepest slot canyon in the United States, and one of the longest slot canyons in the world, with towering walls that rise over 400 feet in some places.
You can choose a short hike just to get a taste of the deepest slot canyon, which will take you about 3-4 hours. Or you can opt out for a multi-day hike . You will need 3 days to hike it all because it is 40+ miles long.
There are multiple trailheads for Buckskin Gulch, but Wire Pass is the most popular, and most people spend 3-4 hours hiking it.
The best time to hike is from April to October, when the weather is dry and the risk of flash floods is lower. Do not attempt this hike if there’s any possibility of rain, because like any slot canyon, there’s a danger of flash flood.

Toadstool Hoodoos is a quick and easy hike that ends with unique mushroom-shaped rock formations.
This unique geological formation is located near the Utah-Arizona border, just a short drive from Kanab. The Toadstool Hoodoos are a series of towering rock formations that have been shaped over millions of years by wind and water erosion. The White Pocket in Utah reminds me of the Wave, but in a yellowish color. So if you weren’t able to get a permit to hike the Wave, it is a great place to explore.
The White Pocket formation was created through a process of erosion over millions of years, and the result is an otherworldly landscape that looks like something out of a science fiction movie. When visiting the White Pocket, you can expect to see swirling patterns of yellow, white, and pink sandstone that have been sculpted into intricate shapes by wind and water.
